TIM AND TAMMY NEWSLETTER #42 - Christmas 2009
23/12/09

Ho! Ho! Ho! Tim and Tammy Friends!

Christmas is just around the corner.

==> just around the corner = perto, se aproximando, logo aí

Every day, I am going to try to write something about Christmas here to help get you into the holiday mood.

==> get you into the holiday mood = colocá-lo no "espírito das festas"
Veja mais exemplos desta estrutura - "to get you in..."
www.timandtammy.com/to-get-you-in

December 1

The Candy Cane

The candy cane is a traditional Christmas holiday treat.  It is in the shape of a cane, and usually has red and white stripes, and is flavored with peppermint or cinnamon.  It is common to hang them on the Christmas tree and then take them off and eat them on Christmas day.

==> treat = guloseima
==> cane = bengala
==> stripe = listras
==> is flavored with = é temperado com
==> peppermint = hortelã; menta
==> cinnamon = canela
==> hang = pendurar
==> take off = tirar

One legend has it that the candy cane originated as a testimony to the true meaning of why Christ came to earth.  The J-shape stands for the name Jesus.  Red represents His blood that was shed on the cross for our sins, and white represents the cleansing of our sins through faith in His sacrifice.

==> one legend has it = diz uma lenda
==> true meaning = verdadeiro significado
==> earth = terra
==> j-shape = formato da letra "J"
==> stands for, phrasal verb = representa
==> blood = sangue
==> shed = derramado
==> cross = cruz
==> sins = pecados
==> cleansing = limpeza; purificação
==> through faith = por intermédio da fé

The Advent Calendar

The advent calendar is a fun way for kids (and adults, too! :) ) to count off the days until Christmas.

==> fun way = maneira divertida

In Brazil, it is hard to find a typical advent calendar with little windows that open to display a Christmas scene or object every day; so my wife made a cross-stitch "advent calendar" and tied a piece of chocolate for each day.  Our kids take turns taking the candy off the calendar (and eating it!) each day until Christmas.

==> little windows = janelinhas
==> display = mostrar
==> cross-stitched a calendar = fez um calendário de ponto-cruz
==> tie = amarrar
==> take turns = revezam
==> taking (the candy) off, phrasal verb = tirando o docinho

Our "advent calendar"

Basically, we are doing a kind of "advent calendar" here on our site - writing something each day as we count down to Christmas.

==> kind of = tipo de
==> count down = fazer contagem regressiva

December 3

Christmas Caroling

One interesting Christmas tradition is Christmas caroling.  People go from house to house singing Christmas carols.  Oftentimes, young people from church groups or other organizations go to homes for the elderly, or other similar institutions, and sing Christmas carols to spread some holiday cheer.

 to go Christmas caroling = o ato de sair para cantar serenatas de natal de casa em casa
 Christmas carols = hinos e canções de natal
 young people = jovens
 homes for the elderly = azilos

December 4

Manger Scene (or Nativity Scene)

(Oops!  The angel is falling over.)

Many manger scenes depicting the birth of Jesus are set up and displayed during this time of the year.

Above is a picture of my family's manger scene, which sits on top of the piano.  If you look closely, you will see that we never put the wisemen at the stable along with the shepherds.  The wiseman saw the star in the East that first Christmas day, and then they set off to see the newborn King.  (They probably had the prophecy of Daniel to guide them.)  It is believed that they reached Jerusalem, and then Bethlehem, probably a year or so later.

 manger = manjedoura
 fall over = despencar
 set up = montar
 display = mostrar
 sits on top of the piano = repousa (em cima do piano)
 look closely = olher cuidadosamente/de perto
 wisemen = magos
 stable = estábulo
 shepherds = pastores
 star = estrela
 East = Oriente
 set off = começaram a viagem
 newborn = recém nascido
 King = Rei
 reach = alcançar, chegar a (algum lugar)
 Bethlehem = Belém
 a year ou so = mais ou menos um ano
 later = depois (mais tarde)

Notice in this verse in Matthew that they worshiped Jesus in His house.  He was not in a stable anymore.

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." - Matthew 2:11

 fell down = prostraram-se
 worship = adorar
 treasures = tesouros
 gold = ouro
 frankincense = incenso
 myrrh = mirra

December 5

Holly

The holly plant is one of the plants most commonly associated with Christmas.  It is used especially in wreaths.

Monday (the 7th) I will teach you a Christmas carol that talks about holly.

 Christmas carol = canção natalina
 wreath = guirlanda

December 6

Hi, boys and girls! I'm Perry Como, And I'm gonna tell you the most wonderful story in the whole world, The Story of the First Christmas!

Do you see the man in the distance, walking slowly, leading a donkey? His name is Joseph! And riding on the donkey is Mary. The hopes and fears of all the years,
Are met in thee tonight!

So they spend the night at a stable.

Now while Jesus lies in the manger asleep,
Let's tiptoe back to the hillside near Bethlehem,
Where the Shepherds tend their flock.
All at once the Shepherds are frightened!
You'd be frightened too,
Because a great light suddenly shines in the sky!
Even the animals are hushed and still,

And you're no longer frightened,
For the Angel brings good news,
News of a Saviour born this day,

Now boys and girls,
Remember, we're still making believe we're with the Shepherds and the Angel,
On the hillside near Bethlehem.
The Shepherds ask the Angel,
Where to find the Christ-child?
And the Angel tells them to go to the manger.
And as they leave the sky is filled with others
Angels singing, Glory to God!
On earth Peace, Goodwill, to Men!

Oh! Come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!

http://www.timandtammy.com/downloads/perry5.zip <== Click on the link to download.

And now, look up into the sky!
See that bright star twinkling in the heavens?
Far away, three men are looking at that star just as we are!
They're riding on camels,
And they're using the star as a guide to lead them to the Christ-child.
Who are these three men who follow the star?
Let's find out!

 sky = céu (parte atmosférica)
 bright star = estrela brilhante
 to twinkle = brilhar
 heavens = céus
 far away = bem longe (daqui)
 just as we are = assim como nós (estamos)

 to lead = guiar
 to find out = descobrir

We Three Kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star

 kings = reis
 bearing gifts = carregando presentes
 to traverse, formal = atravessar
 afar, formal = de longe
 field = campo
 fountain = fonte
 moor = brejo
 mountain = montanha

NOTE FROM TIM AND TAMMY:  Actually, Perry Como got the story a little wrong.

1. The wisemen saw the star while they were in the east (They were probably from the region of Babylon, where they had the writings of the prophet Daniel that told when the Messiah would be born.)

2. They didn't follow the star!  They just saw it while they were in the east.

3. They went to Jerusalem (the capital of Judah) to look for the Messiah.

4. There in Jerusalem, they found the prophecy of Micah that told them that Christ was to be born in Bethlehem.

5. As they journeyed to Bethlehem, that's when the "star" (celestial light) appeared again.

6.  The star took them to the house, not the stable anymore, where Jesus was.

See the full story of the wisemen in the Bible in Matthew chapter 2.

 wisemen = magos (homens sábios)
 got the story wrong = errou na história
 how many there were = quantos haviam
 east = leste (oriente)
 writings = escritas
 Where he would be born = onde nasceria
 look for = procurar
 was to be born = iria (era para) nascer
 to journey, formal = viajar

The First Christmas told by Perry Como (1950 Version) - Part 6
 <== Click on the button to listen.

http://www.timandtammy.com/downloads/perry6.zip <== Click on the link to download.

That's right boys and girls,
The three men on the camels are the three wise men,
The new star guides them to Bethlehem,
To a little baby lying in a manger!
There the three wise men present gifts to the Christ-child,
The first Christmas gifts ever given to anyone,
A gift of gold, of frankincense, and of myrrh!
The wise men fall on their knees to worship Him,
A great peace settles on the night,
For it's the Holy Night!

 wisemen = magos
 present (verbo) = apresentam
 gifts = dádivas, presentes
 gold = ouro
 frankincense = incenso
 myrrh = mirra
 fall on their knees = caem em seus joelhos
 worship = adorar
 peace = paz
 settles = (neste caso) assentar, "cair"
 Holy Night = Noite Santa

OBSERVATION: The Bible does not tell us how many wisemen there were. We know there were three gifts, but there were probably more wisemen. And they did not go to the stable, they went to the house where Jesus was. (See explanation above.)

 how many = quantos
 there were = haviam

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild!
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace!

 tender = tenro
 mild = brando, gentil
 heavenly = celeste

Christmas Cookies

And we can't forget the Christmas cookies! Our home doesn't feel like Christmas without them!

 feel like = sentir como

Here is a recipe for the famous "chocolate chip cookies". My sister translated it into Portuguese for you.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredientes:

Christmas is my favorite holiday because it is the only holiday where people (at least) try to be a better person. It remind me Jesus and a peace time. I wish all days of the year were like Christmas day.

Hugs!

Hello Tim, how're you doing?
I read your comment about how difficulty is to find in Brazil the Advent
Calendar so I decided to do a search on the internet and found this site where you can download the Advent Calendar program in your PC with updated annually, thats mean, for the year 2010 it will be calculated automatically and you can make copies and distribute to your kids and nephews. This is my gift that keeps on giving for you my dear teacher. Merry Christmas and happy New Year for you and all your beautiful family. I'm looking forward to attend your Tips next year.
